Christian Schools and Addressing Cultural Challenges
As modern American culture strays ever further from its Judeo-Christian foundations, Christian schools sometimes find themselves unexpectedly thrust into the midst of conflict. Often, conflict manifests as a political issue—and politics, while always a pretty ugly arena, seems uglier than ever over the last decade or two. Victorian Values for the 21st Century
We all know that character matters. Developing good character is one of the educational pillars at Horizon Chris-tian School, along with academic excellence and Biblical worldview. The attached article published in The Globe and Mail articulates just how important discipline, conscientiousness and diligence really are in today's economy. The article contends that individuals who are self-regulated and have good work habits will rise above others who may have credentials or connections. But developing self-control isn't an easy thing in our culture. According to Daniel Akst in his book, "Temptation: Finding Self-Control in an Age of Excess, "modern life requires an unnatural degree of self-control," and "immerses us daily in a set of temptations far more evolved than we are." The article also presents some interesting thoughts about the difficulty of developing those character traits, specifically in boys. So if cultivating discipline, conscientiousness and diligence are that important, how should parents and schools go about teaching those traits? It's not easy, but well thought out expectations, firm boundaries, and loving consisten-cy are part of the answer. So is a Biblical worldview — "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:3. Click here to read the full article (PDF)
